As the episode progresses, we learn more about Clavius himself - his background, his beliefs, and his inner struggle as he witnesses the events of that fateful day. Despite being a soldier of Rome, Clavius begins to question his own loyalties and beliefs in the face of the powerful and inexplicable events he witnesses.
